In Canada, the most important thing to remember when shopping for legal pot is to know where you’re buying it.
There are some things you can do, such as the location and the type of cannabis you are buying, but the key is to always ask the seller what they have in stock.
“It is always a good idea to check the product and make sure that there is something available for you,” says Peter Gervais, director of research and consulting at the Canadian Medical Cannabis Association.
The Canadian Association of Professional Growers (CMPG) has a lot of advice on how to do this.
Gervays says that’s one of the best tips you can get, because the information on the label is often what you’re looking for.
“You should always be aware of the product that you’re getting.
Always make sure to check what kind of product they are selling.”
Gervas says that means you should also look for the cannabis’s THC content and potency.
THC is the psychoactive component of cannabis that makes people high.
The lower the THC content, the more concentrated the marijuana becomes.
That means you can make a much stronger pot, but you won’t be as high as a high quality concentrate.
“If you’re not getting that high, don’t buy it,” says Gervans advice.
Gershenfeld says he prefers to buy high quality, high potency marijuana over pot with a lot less THC.
“Most of the times I’ll find it to be a little bit better than a high-grade concentrate,” he says.
He also suggests you check the packaging of your cannabis for the name of the brand.
If it says Cannabidiol (CBD), Gervias favourite brand, it means you’re on the right track.
But the names of brands like Cannabix, Canna and K2 are all illegal in Canada, so be aware.
“They’re illegal,” says Jody Macdonald, co-founder of the cannabis business information site 420 Canada.
Macdonald says that is also why she doesn’t use a name like “Mariachi,” because it can be misleading.
Gelsby says he’s been buying marijuana online for a few years and is “pretty happy” with the results.
He recommends looking at the labels on most products.
“I’ve found that the quality is very consistent, it’s not one brand of pot,” says he.
“And they’re usually cheaper.”
There are a few other things you should know about cannabis and legal marijuana.
It has to be grown in licensed facilities that have been approved by Health Canada, says Gershain.
There’s also to be labelled, Gervases advice.
“Always read the label,” says Macdonald.
The name of a plant can also have a big impact on how much it costs.
Gevins says that can be especially important if you’re in a hurry and buying a new product.
“When you go to buy a new weed, you have to know what you are getting,” he advises.
“The label should tell you what it is, and how much you’re going to pay.”
Macdonald also suggests looking for the brand name and the THC concentration on the packaging.
If there’s not a lot on the front of the package, that means the product is probably not high quality.
If the product’s name is written in the centre of the label, it may be labelled high potency.
“That means you have a high dose of THC,” she says.
Gendreau says you should always read the product labels.
“Don’t be afraid to ask questions and be skeptical,” he adds.
Gervezas advises buying cannabis from a licensed producer.
“There are a lot more quality growers than there are dispensaries.
And they’re getting better and better,” he recommends.
You can find a list of licensed producers and dispensaries on the Canadian Cannabis Federation website.
But Gervis says he recommends checking the quality of products at the door.
“Just don’t expect the products to be of the same quality as you’re used to seeing in dispensaries,” he warns.
